Melvin J. Everson, the seventh of ten children, was born in Abbeville, Georgia on September 24, 1957 to the late Northern and Willa B. Everson. Melvin received his formal education in Wilcox County, graduating from Wilcox County High in 1975. Melvin received his BS Degree in Criminology in 1983 from Albany State University. Melvin is married to the former Ms. Geraldine McAdoo, that he lovingly refers to as Gerri. Melvin and Gerri are the proud parents of one child, Ricardo DeAndre Everson, who is a graduate from the University of Georgia. Melvin is a twenty-three year retiree from the US Army/Reserve. Melvin served five years on the Planning and Zoning Board prior for the city of Snellville. In 1999, Melvin ran for city council and lost by 54 votes. In 2001, God opened another door and Melvin availed himself again for public service and on August 8, 2001, Melvin was elected to the Snellville City Council making him the first ever elected black official for the city. Melvin's peers elected him as Mayor Pro Tem three consecutive years. In 2004, resigned his council seat and ran for an open seat in the Georgia State House of Representatives. Once again, Melvin lost by 54 votes. As only God can provide a way, in 2005, the opportunity presented itself again and this time, Melvin was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives. Once again, Melvin made history in many ways. Melvin is the first african-american elected to the General Assembly that resides in Gwinnett County. He is also the first african-american to win a contested race for the Georgia General Assembly since reconstruction. Representative Everson serves on the House Education, Transportation, and Judiciary Non-Civil committees. Representative Everson was appointed by Speaker of the House Glenn Richardson to serve on the States Child Fatality Review Panel.
Melvin is currently a Fellowship Cell Pastor with Salem Missionary Baptist Church located in Lilburn, Georgia. Melvin has also coordinated events for the men's Ministry for Salem and now carries out worship service every first Sunday at Antoine Graves Apartments, formerly known as Grady Homes, in Atlanta, Georgia.
Melvin has served well in his community and his entire life has been one of giving back to the community. Melvin currently serves on the Gwinnett County Human Relations Board and was recently appointed to the Gwinnett County Human Relations Advisory Board for the Gwinnett County School System.
Melvin is a charter member and past president of the Snellville Optimist Club. Melvin has also served as two-term president and two-term vice president of the South Gwinnett High School PTSA, two-term president, two-term vice president, one-term treasurer, and currently president of the Lilburn Cooperative Ministry. Melvin is the recipient of many community and political awards from the Gwinnett United Ebony Society: South DeKalb Republican Pioneer Award, The Gwinnett Black Republican Council Service Award, Clayton County United Way Campaign Manager Service Award, Omega Si Phi Gwinnett Chapter 2005 Citizen of the Year award and various medals and ribbons from the US military. Melvin is also a proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated chapter of Nu Mu Lambda in Decatur where he has served as chaplain.
Melvin is currently the business development manager for Partners-In Staffing, Inc. located in Snellville, Georgia.
