Georgia State Representative Amy Alexander Carter (D-Valdosta) represents House District 175 including part of Lowndes County, primarily the city of Valdosta.
A life long resident of South Georgia, Amy grew up in Valdosta, Georgia, where she attended public schools and graduated from Valdosta State University.
A career educator, Amy is the Diversified Cooperative Training Coordinator for Lowndes High School. Through a partnership with local businesses, she prepares students for the challenges they will face in the real world. Before working with high school students, Amy was a Business & Office Technology instructor at Valdosta Technical College. Her experience working with students has given Amy an understanding of the needs and challenges facing our educational system.
Amy is also a committed community servant. She energetically seeks innovative and progressive solutions to issues in her community and around the state. She has been honored for her work and has received recognition including: Georgia’s Outstanding New Career and Technical Education Teacher of the Year, 2002; Valdosta Woman of the Year, 2003; Leadership Georgia’s Dale Threadgill Community Service Award, 2004; Valdosta-North Rotary Club Most Outstanding Member, 2004; Azalea City Kiwanis Club Citizen of the Year, 2005; Leadership Lowndes Class of 1997 and Board of Trustee 1998-2000; Lowndes Youth Leadership League, Chairperson, Inaugural Class of 1999; Leadership Georgia Class of 2002; Valdosta Junior Service League; Valdosta-North Rotary Club; Valdosta Technical College Foundation Board of Trustee; Lowndes Education Improvement Foundation Trustee; R. Wayne Alexander Memorial Scholarship Trustee; Habitat for Humanity, 2003 Jimmy Carter Work Project Entertainment Chair; Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts, Guild Member; Trade and Industrial Educators of Georgia (TIEGA); Georgia Association for Career and Technical Education (GACTE); Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE); Georgia Association of Educators (GAE); volunteer for American Red Cross, United Way, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Amy will serve on the House Committees for Children and Youth, Education, Higher Education, and Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight.
As a legislator, Amy hopes to address such issues as drop out rates, class sizes, expansion of Georgia’s Pre-K program, technology in classrooms, access to foreign language instruction, access to quality and affordable healthcare, economic development opportunities, and measures to support law enforcement and corrections officers.
Amy lives in Valdosta, Georgia, with her husband and their two children. They attend First Christian Church where Amy serves as a Deacon.
