A RESOLUTION

Commending the Promised Land Farm and recognizing the 2008 Collard Green Festival and the Collard Green Festival Parade; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Johnson family, owners of the Promised Land Farm, is widely recognized as one of the most charitable families in all of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, in 1990, brothers Robert and Willie and cousin Tony Johnson took a vacant parcel of land and converted it into the Promised Land Farm; and

WHEREAS, the farm is known for producing a summer crop of corn, butter beans, okra, squash, watermelons, cucumbers, and sugar cane and a winter crop of tomatoes, turnips, collard greens, mustard greens, cabbage, kale, and rutabagas, all ensuring a year round harvest; and

WHEREAS, the Johnsons are known to generously donate surplus crops to area shelters and nonprofit organizations such as the Salvation Army, Inner City Night Shelter, and local churches; and

WHEREAS, in 1999, the Collard Green Festival was started and the Johnsons began giving free collard greens to senior citizens and disabled veterans; and

WHEREAS, the event is now celebrated with live gospel music, home-cooked barbecue, and door prizes donated by local businesses and has grown to include the Collard Green Festival Parade; and

WHEREAS, for the remarkable generosity the Johnson family has shown and the community spirit that the Collard Green Festival and this year's parade have built, it is both fitting and proper that these individuals and this festival be recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Robert, Willie, and the entire Johnson family for their selfless contributions to the needy, senior citizens, disabled veterans, and the community and recognize the 2008 Collard Green Festival and the Collard Green Festival Parade.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Johnson family and the Promised Land Farm.
