Senate Resolution 927

A RESOLUTION


Commending Ms. Bertie Mae Garrett as the Distinguished Senior Georgian for 2008; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Ms. Bertie Mae Garrett was born May 27, 1917; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Bertie Mae Garrett was recognized by Middle Georgia College as an Associate Professor Emerita of Business Education in 2002-2004, having retired from teaching in 1983; and

WHEREAS, she received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from Georgia College and her Doctor of Education degree from the University of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Bertie Mae was married to the late Ralph Garrett and has lived in Dodge County most of her life; and

WHEREAS, she has influenced the lives of many Dodge County residents, serving as a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, managing the Lifeline Assistance program for the Eastman Pilot Club, volunteering with the ombudsman program, as well as working with numerous other organizations; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Bertie Mae was a teacher at Old Dodge High School, imparting wisdom and positive values to all of the many students who were in her classes and who benefitted from her teaching; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Bertie Mae is active in Zebulon Baptist Church and has demonstrated her passion for mission work as a generous supporter of missions throughout the Southern Baptist Convention, in which there are numerous scholarships founded in her name at various schools; and

WHEREAS, she has received many honors for her volunteer services and for serving in the Peace Corps and traveling throughout the world; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Bertie Mae is an active, vibrant volunteer for the Heart of Georgia Altamaha Community Action Agency Ombudsman Program; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Bertie Mae has published two books, Chug Chug Lady from Georgia and Gathering Jewels, chronicling her adventures around the world in 990 days as a 48 year old Peace Corps volunteer and her subsequent 34 years as a summer missionary to 37 countries; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Bertie Mae has lived her lifelong motto, "Service is the rent we pay for the space we occupy"; and

WHEREAS, she is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness, and, by the example she has made of her life, she makes this world a better place to live, and it is only fitting and proper that she be appropriately recognized during this very special and memorable time of her life.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body heartily commends Ms. Bertie Mae Garrett for her unselfish, dedicated, and loving service to the members of her community and state and extends to her its most sincere best wishes for continued health and happiness.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ms. Bertie Mae Garrett.
