A RESOLUTION


Commending and congratulating Dr. Charles Webb on the occasion of his retirement; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Webb brings more than 30 years of experience in education to his assignment as Superintendent of Appling County Schools, which began on July 1, 2006; and

WHEREAS, this highly respected professional educator and administrator has served with honor and distinction as teacher, coach, department chair, athletics director, assistant principal, principal, and central office administrator; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Webb has worked with Bulloch County Schools, 1990-2006; Elbert County Schools, 1985-1990; and Bulloch Academy, 1976-1985, and served as the superintendent of recreation for the City of Dalton, 1973-1976, and assistant superintendent of recreation for the City of Statesboro, 1970-1973; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Webb has earned four degrees from Georgia Southern University, including a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Administration in 2001; he is a graduate of the U. S. Army War College, 1997, and the U. S. Army Command and General Staff College, 1982; and he joined the Georgia Army National Guard in 1968 as a private and retired in 2000 as a Brigadier General; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Webb was a highly successful head football coach and athletics director, being listed among the top 60 all-time winningnest football coaches in Georgia by the Georgia High School Football Magazine in 1998, and earlier in his career he also coached baseball, softball, boys and girls basketball, golf, and track and field; and

WHEREAS, he was named STAR teacher in 1979 by the Statesboro-Bulloch County Chamber of Commerce, recognized in 1972 by the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation for his local leadership in Special Olympics, inducted into Phi Delta Kappa in 1993, appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue to the Georgia Board of Early Care and Learning in 2005, and recognized with the Ashe-Stuckey Leadership in Government Award in 2004; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Webb has served on the board of directors of the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education, the board of trustees for the Appling County Arts Council, and the board of directors of the local Chamber of Commerce and the Regional Economic Development Authority; and

WHEREAS, he is a member of the American Legion and other military and veterans organizations, the Baxley Kiwanis Club, and the local branch of the NAACP; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Webb is an elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and a 2005 graduate of the School of Laity, a three-year program of biblical study sponsored by the Savannah Presbytery; and

WHEREAS, he and his wife Lynda have two daughters; and

WHEREAS, he is a shining example of the important impact that the efforts of individual education professionals and school superintendents are making on the quality of education received by the children of this state and it is abundantly fitting and proper that his superlative accomplishments be recognized appropriately.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body heartily commend Dr. Charles Webb for his sacrifice, foresight, accomplishment, and contributions on behalf of education in Georgia and for the positive influence he has had upon the lives and futures of countless young people in this state; congratulate him upon the occasion of his retirement; and extend to him their most sincere best wishes for health and happiness in the future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Charles Webb.
