Senate Resolution 913

A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Echols County, Georgia, on its 150th year of existence; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Echols County was incorporated in 1858 and named after Brigadier General Robert M. Echols and was the 130th Georgia county; and

WHEREAS, Echols County sits on the Florida border and is the only county in Georgia through which the famous Suwannee River flows; and

WHEREAS, its first election was held in 1859 in the town of Troublesome, which is now the county seat, Statenville; and

WHEREAS, Echols County's first school was built in the early 1800's; and

WHEREAS, Echols County was originally claimed by both the United States and Spain and by both Georgia and Florida; and

WHEREAS, early records show that approximately 1,491 people, 314 of which were slaves, lived in the county, and today approximately 3,750 people reside in Echols County, making it one of the least populated counties in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, since the 1950's, agriculture has dominated with truck farming dramatically increasing since the 1960's due to local produce companies locating in the county; and

WHEREAS, a sign at the western border of the county declares Echols County to be the "Carrot Capital" of the South; and

WHEREAS, Echols County Schools was recently recognized for being the first county school system in Georgia to meet the "21st Century Requirements" in technology.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize and commend Echols County on its 150th year of existence and wish the fine citizens of Echols County the best for the future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Rolla Hendrickson.
