Senate Resolution 865

A RESOLUTION


Congratulating Sharmel Veasley and commending the Muscogee County Office of Elections and Registration and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the strength of any democratic society lies in the education, enlightenment, and participation of its citizens; and

WHEREAS, the continuity and vitality of any democratic society lies in the informed participation on many levels of its citizens; and

WHEREAS, it is the goal of the State of Georgia to encourage and to enlarge the numbers of its citizens who actively and regularly participate in the democratic process and who accept with eagerness and enthusiasm the responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society; and

WHEREAS, the Muscogee County Office of Elections and Registration has, in conjunction with Carver High School, implemented a program in which high school students are trained to become qualified poll workers; and

WHEREAS, on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, Sharmel Veasley, an 18 year old senior attending Carver High School, participated in her very first election by casting her first ballot and then working as a poll officer.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body congratulates Sharmel Veasley for receiving the requisite training for service as an election poll officer and serving as a poll officer during an election.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Muscogee County Office of Elections and Registration is commended for actively working to make students aware of the benefits of good citizenship by fostering their participation in the democratic process through the exercise of their voting rights and by becoming qualified poll workers; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Sharmel Veasley and the Muscogee County Office of Elections and Registraton.
