RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA)
on the 20th anniversary of its Discoverers Award program; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
scientists in cutting-edge laboratories of America´s pharmaceutical
research companies create most of the world´s new medicines, which benefit
tens of millions of patients; and
WHEREAS,
because of their efforts, more than 2,500 medicines are in development today,
giving patients greater therapeutic options; and
WHEREAS,
these potential new treatments include pharmaceuticals for cancer,
Alzheimer´s disease, infectious disease, heart disease, arthritis, stroke,
diabetes, obesity, hypertension, HIV/AIDS, and many other life-threatening and
debilitating diseases and medical conditions; and
WHEREAS,
the men and women who discover and create these medicines deserve recognition
for their life-saving and life-enhancing accomplishments; and
WHEREAS,
to accomplish this the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America
(PhRMA) established the Discoverers Award program, which each year honors those
scientists who tirelessly research and develop the new pharmaceuticals that have
benefitted patients worldwide; and
WHEREAS,
it has been stated that this award is not just for the scientists, but for the
hundreds of employees and outside investigators who devote countless days and
nights to exploring the promise of a therapy for often desperate
patients.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize
the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America on the 20th anniversary
of its Discoverers Award program and commend them for their outstanding work in
pharmaceutical research.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Pharmaceutical
Research and Manufacturers of America.
