Senate Resolution 809
By: Senators Jones of the 10th, Brown of the 26th, Johnson of the 1st, Seay of the 34th, Chapman of the 3rd and others

A RESOLUTION

Urging Congress, governmental agencies, and the automobile industry to substitute the term "life belt" for "seat belt" and "life bag" for "air bag"; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the advent of the now ubiquitous seat belt and air bag has been arguably the most important automotive invention in terms of passenger safety, having saved countless lives on the highways; and

WHEREAS, in spite of the belt´s importance, its nomenclature is slightly misleading, as, notwithstanding a common idiomatic phrase, the belt was added not to save seats but rather lives; and

WHEREAS, similarly, air bags are, in fact, inflated with compressed gas and are intended to and do save lives; and

WHEREAS, more accurate terms for these devices would be life belt and life bag, terms that reflect the true mission of the devices; and

WHEREAS, calling the belt a life belt could have the salutary effect of attracting attention to its importance, thus increasing usage and saving even more lives.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the members of this body urge governmental agencies, and the National Transportation Safety Board in particular, as well as automobile manufacturers, advertisers, and dealers to revise their nomenclature to reflect the terms "life belt" and "life bag."

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that other states are urged to amend laws to provide for references to "life belts" and "life bags" rather than the older terms.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the Georgia Congressional Delegation, the public, and the press.
