A RESOLUTION


Honoring and remembering the life of Archbishop Jimmie L. Smith; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia lost one of its finest and most distinguished individuals with the passing of Archbishop Jimmie L. Smith; and

WHEREAS, Archbishop had an extensive educational background, attending Durham Business College in Durham, North Carolina; North Carolina Central University; Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in history with a minor in religion; two doctorate degrees from South West London University in London, England, and California School of Theology in Berkley, California; Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and Beulah Heights Bible College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he studied religious education; and

WHEREAS, Archbishop Smith was a native of Lithonia, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, he was called into the ministry at the age of 18, became a pastor at the age of 20, and has been spreading the Word of God for 42 years; and

WHEREAS, Archbishop Smith was the presiding prelate of the Light of the World Interdenominational International Association and oversaw ministries in 34 countries with a membership of more than 200,000; and

WHEREAS, in 1982, he married Ruth W. Smith, and together they raised a family of five children and eight grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, he and his wife organized the Light of the World Christian Academy; and

WHEREAS, Archbishop Smith has authored three books, and he is the executive producer and recording artist of three CDs; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join together in honoring the memory of Archbishop Jimmie L. Smith and extending the deepest and most sincere condolences to his family and friends.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Archbishop Jimmie L. Smith.
