RESOLUTION
Remembering
and honoring the life of John Temple Phillips, Jr.; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
John Temple Phillips, Jr., was born in Suffolk, Virginia on June 13, 1915;
and
WHEREAS,
growing up in Virginia, he attended public schools and Virginia Polytechnical
Institute, and upon graduation joined the Army Air Force, eventually being
discharged with the rank of captain; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Phillips began his career with Lilliston Implement Company as a sales
representative, going on to become vice president and general manager,
president, and eventually Chairman of the Board; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Phillips, a devoted family man, a dedicated church member, and a dedicated
member of his community, was involved in numerous civic organizations such as
past president of Southern Farm Equipment Manufacturers; past vice-chairman of
the joint Albany-Dougherty County Planning Commission; past director of
Associated Industries of Georgia; former member of the National Defense
Executive Reserve; past director and chairman of the Farm and Industrial
Equipment Institute; past director of First State Bank and Trust; former member
of the Advisory Committee of Vocational Technical Schools for the State of
Georgia; trustee emeritus for Darton College; former member of the Education
Goals Commission, State of Georgia; former member of the United States
Department of Commerce Advisory Committee for Agribusiness Industry; former
director of Southern Industrial Relations Conference; trustee of the Georgia
Agrirama Foundation; past director of the Albany Chamber of Commerce; former
trustee of the Medical College of Georgia Foundation, Inc.; member of Phoebe
Putney Memorial Hospital Foundation Board; and member of the Peanut Institute
Development Foundation Committee; and
WHEREAS,
he gave more than 50 years of service to many organizations, including the
Albany Rotary Club, past president and a Paul Harris Fellow; the Boy Scouts of
America, Eagle Scout and the recipient of the "Distinguished Eagle" and "Silver
Beaver" awards; Albany YMCA, past president; American Society of Agricultural
Engineers, state chairman; and the American Legion; and
WHEREAS,
because of his long and outstanding involvement in numerous civic, church, and
community organizations, he was the recipient of numerous awards;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Phillips was an inspiration to everyone he met because of his positive
outlook on life, his radiant smile, and his deep love of God, believing wholly
in service to his family, community, and God; and
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia has lost one of its most distinguished community leaders
with the passing of Mr. John Temple Phillips, Jr.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join
together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Mr. John Temple
Phillips, Jr., and extend their most sincere condolences to his
family.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. John
Temple Phillips, Jr.
