RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Thomas C. Gilliland on the occasion of his retirement from United
Community Banks, Inc.; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Thomas C. Gilliland was born in Atlanta, Georgia, where he attended the
Westminster Schools, then went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts from the
University of Georgia and a Juris Doctor from Emory University; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Gilliland resides in Blairsville, Georgia, with his wife Candace and their
two sons, Tom, Jr., and Jason; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Gilliland joined United Community Banks, Inc. in 1992, and he is also
director of several banks in Ellijay, McCaysville, Blue Ridge, and Carrollton,
Georgia, and serves as chairman of the board of United Community Bank, North
Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
throughout his distinguished career he has served in many capacities, including
former Chief of Staff to Lieutenant Governor Pierre Howard; member of the Y2K
task force under Governor Roy E. Barnes; former partner with the law firm of
Hurt, Richardson, Garner, Todd and Cadenhead in Atlanta, Georgia; former
chairman of the Stone Mountain Authority; and chairman of Lt. Governor Casey
Cagle's transition committee; and
WHEREAS,
he has served on many boards and committees, including the Fannin County Chamber
of Commerce; Fannin Regional Hospital; Fannin County Arts Association; Regional
Industrial Authority of Union, Towns, and Fannin Counties; Young Harris College;
Fannin County Joint Comprehensive Planning Committee; Fannin County Industrial
Authority; Georgia Chamber of Commerce; and Georgia Affordable Housing
Corporation; and
WHEREAS,
in 2007, he was nominated by President George W. Bush to serve a four-year term
on the Tennessee Valley Authority board of directors and would become Georgia's
first representative on this prestigious board; and
WHEREAS,
he is the co-author of
Truth in Lending
Disclosure Act, Loans Secured by Real
Property, published by Harrison Publishing
Company; and
WHEREAS,
he has been a member of numerous civic and professional organizations, such as
the Atlanta Hospital, Hospitality House; the Callanwolde Foundation; the
Decatur-DeKalb Y.M.C.A.; the Gridiron Society; Truett-McConnell College; and he
is an active member of First United Methodist Church in Blairsville, Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
his remarkable diplomacy, integrity, and sensitivity to the needs of the
citizens of his community and state have earned him the respect and admiration
of his family, friends, and business associates.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body commends Thomas C.
Gilliland on an outstanding career and for his effective, unselfish, and
dedicated public service to the citizens of his community and this
state.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Thomas C. Gilliland.
