A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the 2008 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the 2008 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair is the crowning achievement in high school science competitions in the United States and internationally; and

WHEREAS, the competitive process leading up to Intel International Science and Engineering Fair encourages and celebrates high school students whose curiosity has led them on a year-long pursuit of asking questions, constructing and testing hypotheses, and communicating ideas with others; and

WHEREAS, from May 11 to May 16, 2008, over 1,500 of the world's brightest young scientists and inventors, including an estimated 30 young Georgians, will attend the 2008 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair presented by Agilent Technologies; and

WHEREAS, they will compete for over $4 million in scholarships and awards; and

WHEREAS, they will be inspired by Nobel Laureates, academicians, and leading scientists and researchers from Georgia and around the world who will be attending this event; and

WHEREAS, by nurturing science education and outreach in our state, we are investing in Georgia's future economic growth; and

WHEREAS, supporters of the 2008 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair have an opportunity to join with the Atlanta community in creating a world-class celebration of creative inquiry and scientific excellence, raising awareness of the importance of research and scientific literacy and demonstrating to young people from around the world and Georgia that our state values such achievements; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize and commend the following individuals for supporting the 2008 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and for their commitment to fostering science education: advisory committee members Governor Sonny Perdue, Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle, Mayor Shirley Franklin, State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox, Atlanta City Council Member Kwanza Hall, Judy M. Anderson, Stuart Bennett, Michael Cassidy, Charles Craig, Robert W. Fri, Michael A. Gerber, Dr. Beverly Hall, Dudley R. Herschbach, H. Robert Horvitz, Dr. Michael Johns, Jeffery C. Levy, Tino J. Mantella, Peggy V. McCormick, Sig Mosley, Jeb Stewart, and Kenneth C. Stewart; 2008 host committee members William K. Dodd, Paul Ohme, and Mary Lue Walser; and Craig Barrrett, Chairman of the Board of Intel Corporation.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is hereby authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the 2008 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair Host Committee.
