A RESOLUTION


Expressing regret at the passing of Jimmy M. Smith; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia has lost one of its finest and most distinguished citizens with the unfortunate passing of Jimmy M. Smith on February 12, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Smith, a native and sixth generation resident of Haralson County, was a beloved farmer, businessman, Eagle Scout, and leader of the community; and

WHEREAS, he was born on January 16, 1950, to the late Amelia Sanders Smith and the late Jim Frank Smith who served as the Commissioner of Haralson County for 19 years; and

WHEREAS, he graduated from Buchanan High School, attended West Georgia college, and was a farmer for his entire adult life, owning and operating the Smith Fence Company and serving as president of Smith Farms and Trucking; and

WHEREAS, like his father, Jimmy M. Smith was a Haralson County Commissioner and, at the time of his passing, was serving as a member of Haralson County Development Authority, the chair of Membership Services for the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Haralson County Farm Bureau, and chair for the USDA Farm Service Agency for Haralson, Carroll, Paulding, Douglas, and Fulton counties; and

WHEREAS, he also served as president of the Haralson County Cattleman's Association, a 4-H volunteer, and a Boy Scout leader, and he was honored by the Haralson County Chamber of Commerce as a Volunteer of the Year for the Buchanan area; and

WHEREAS, he was known throughout the community for his hospitality; he never hesitated to open up his home to others for the past 26 years, and he hosted an annual Trout Rodeo, an event sponsored by the Haralson County Wildlife Association that was popular among both the young and old of Haralson County attracting approximately 2,500 people in 2006; and

WHEREAS, the Trout Rodeo will continue in his honor on May 12, 2007, with a special memorial service for Mr. Smith that will unveil a magnificent granite monument with gold lettering; and

WHEREAS, he was the loving husband of Dr. Martha Gillham Smith who is the coordinator for the ELL and gifted programs at the Haralson County School System; and

WHEREAS, his unfortunate departure has left scars upon the hearts of grieving friends, family, and colleagues in Georgia and elsewhere.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join together in honoring the memory of Jimmy M. Smith and extending the deepest and most sincere condolences to his family and friends.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Jimmy M. Smith.
