RESOLUTION
Recognizing
January 29, 2008, as "Drinking Water Security Day" in the State of Georgia; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia is concerned about the health and safety of the people of
Georgia and currently places a high priority on maintaining drinking water
security; and
WHEREAS,
since September 11, 2001, experts including the federal General Accounting
Office, the American Water Works Association, National Rural Water Association,
Georgia Rural Water Association, and the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police
recognize the extreme high vulnerability to our drinking water systems; and
preventing the introduction of poison agents or toxins into our water by a
foreign or domestic terrorist is the immediate concern of the citizens of the
State of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
since their inception, the cities and counties of the State of Georgia have
instituted a variety of programs and policies overseeing public health
facilities and services, including water utilities, and providing for the
welfare and protection of the citizens in the state; and
WHEREAS,
many leading cities and counties have adopted new technologies to protect their
drinking water and it is in the interest of all the citizens of the State of
Georgia for all communities to implement these technologies; and
WHEREAS,
the attention of the public must be drawn to the concern for drinking water
security and the health and safety of the people of the State of Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
safe drinking water is vital to Georgia´s economic future, and these
visionary cities and counties of Georgia are to be commended for their unfailing
devotion to their citizens, their communities, and this great
state.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize
January 29, 2008, as "Drinking Water Security Day" in the State of Georgia.
