A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Beverly Vaughn; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Beverly Vaughn is a native of DeKalb County, Georgia, and is a distinguished graduate of Young Harris College and Georgia Southern University, where she earned a degree in Therapeutic Recreation; and

WHEREAS, she has nurtured a phenomenal career in the areas of rehabilitation, therapeutic recreation, and interscholastic athletics for student athletes with physical or visual impairments; and

WHEREAS, she held the position of coordinator of Adapted Sports for the DeKalb County School System from 1990 to 2006, and during her tenure, she developed the interscholastic athletic program model for adapted sports that has been recognized nationally as an outstanding and innovative program; and

WHEREAS, she cofounded the American Association of Adapted Sports Programs (AAASP) to serve as the governing body for interscholastic adapted athletics programs, and she was instrumental in developing an alliance with the Georgia High School Association to serve Georgia students with physical disabilities or visual impairments in the area of athletics; and

WHEREAS, under Beverly Vaughn's capable leadership, the AAASP has received numerous national commendations and awards, including the 2006 Program Recognition Award by the American Association of Physical Activity and Recreation, the America's Promise award, and the Tommy Nobis Center Program Award; and

WHEREAS, AAASP was singled out among the top 100 programs in the nation among a field of 1,600 that were reviewed as semi-finalists for the Innovations in American Government Award of the Ford Foundation at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government; and

WHEREAS, Beverly Vaughn is a 2006 recipient of the Congressional Medal of Distinction for her unwavering commitment and advocacy for children and families with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, her dedication to children with disabilities and a vision for their full inclusion in school and the community has brought honor to the State of Georgia.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body hereby recognize Beverly Vaughn for her tireless and compassionate service to youth with disabilities in this state, congratulate her on her extensive awards and honors, and extend to her their sincerest best wishes for her future health and fulfillment.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Beverly Vaughn.
