RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and expressing support for civic education in our public schools; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
our constitutional democracy requires the continued participation of an engaged
citizenry to function effectively; and
WHEREAS,
it is widely recognized that the civic mission of schools is essential to the
preparation of future citizens; and
WHEREAS,
representative delegations from Georgia have participated in the Congressional
Conferences on Civic Education for the past four years and conference delegates
have affirmed the need for a renewed national and state commitment to civic
education; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia Council for the Social Studies has developed a position paper,
"Teaching and Learning Social Studies in Georgia," that recognizes social
studies as a vital discipline and of critical importance to the development of
citizens with the ability and disposition to participate effectively in a
democratic society.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, that the members of this body endorse
the continued participation in and the work of the Congressional Conference on
Civic Education and the position of teaching and learning social studies in
Georgia as presented by the Georgia Council for the Social Studies.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized to transmit
appropriate copies of this resolution to the Georgia delegation to the
Congressional Conference on Civic Education and the Georgia Council for the
Social Studies.
