A RESOLUTION


Recognizing the Africa World Museum and Center and the Bridging the Gap and Building the Bridge Conference; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Bridging the Gap and Building the Bridge Conference will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, from October 25 to October 28, 2007, with the mission of initiating a profound dialogue between the nations of Africa and members of the African diaspora in the United States and throughout the world; and

WHEREAS, this ambitious event is being coordinated by the Africa Heritage Foundation and the Africa World Museum and Center through the pioneering leadership of Chief Tunde Adetunji, CEO and president of the Africa World Museum and Center; and

WHEREAS, the Africa World Museum and Center opened its doors in 1996, the same year that Atlanta welcomed the nations of the world to celebrate the Centennial Olympics, and since that time, the Africa World Museum and Center has been committed to the vision of the City of Atlanta as a route to global participation in the Southeastern United States; and

WHEREAS, the Africa World Museum and Center strives to develop new economic highways between the City of Atlanta and the various nations of Africa and to promote Africa as a continent of possibilities; and

WHEREAS, Atlanta is the proud home of several consulates from African nations, including Liberia, Nigeria, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Tanzania, as well as sister city relationships with Lagos, Nigeria, and Cotnou, Benin; and

WHEREAS, the African community in the Atlanta area numbers well over 40,000 residents who contribute vastly to the city's international economic, academic, and cultural exchange; and

WHEREAS, the Bridging the Gap and Building the Bridge Conference has the potential to significantly raise awareness about Africa and create new opportunities for cultural and economic exchange between the State of Georgia and the various nations of Africa.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize the Bridging the Gap and Building the Bridge Conference, commend Chief Tunde Adetunji for his immense wisdom and diligence in facilitating Georgia's increased participation in global affairs, and extend to Chief Tunde Adetunji and the Africa World Museum and Center their sincerest best wishes for the future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Africa World Museum and Center.
