RESOLUTION
Commending
Bertie Mae Garrett; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Bertie Mae Garrett will turn 90 years old on May 27, 2007; and
WHEREAS,
Bertie Mae Garrett was recognized by Middle Georgia College as an Associate
Professor Emerita of Business Education in 2002-2004, having retired from
teaching in 1983; and
WHEREAS,
she received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from
Georgia College and her Doctor of Education degree from the University of
Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Bertie Mae was married to the late Ralph Garrett and has lived in Dodge County
most of her life, providing service as a Pink Lady, an ombudsman, and with the
Pilot Club, as well as numerous other organizations; and
WHEREAS,
she has influenced the lives of many Dodge County residents as a teacher at Old
Dodge High School, imparting wisdom and positive values to all of the many
students who were in her classes and who benefitted from her teaching;
and
WHEREAS,
Bertie Mae is active in Zebulon Baptist Church and has demonstrated her passion
for mission work as a generous supporter of missions throughout the Southern
Baptist Convention in which there are numerous scholarships founded in her name
at various schools; and
WHEREAS,
she has received many honors for her volunteer services and for serving in the
Peace Corps for a number of years and traveling throughout the world;
and
WHEREAS,
Bertie Mae just had her second book,
Gathering
Jewels, published, and it follows Chug
Chug Lady from Georgia, chronicling her adventures around the world in 990 days
as a 48 year old Peace Corps volunteer; and
WHEREAS,
Bertie Mae has lived her lifelong motto, "Service is the rent we pay for the
space we occupy"; and
WHEREAS,
she is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness, and by the example she has made
of her life, she makes this world a better place to live, and it is only fitting
and proper that she be appropriately recognized during this very special and
memorable time of her life.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body heartily commends Bertie
Mae Garrett for her unselfish, dedicated, and loving service to the members of
her community and state; congratulates her on the remarkable occasion of her
90th birthday; and extends to her its most sincere best wishes for continued
health and happiness.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Bertie Mae Garrett.
