A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Dr. Wanda Grogan; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. Wanda Grogan has been named to the College of Family and Consumer Sciences Honor Hall of Recognition for outstanding service as a professional leader in Family and Consumer Sciences; and

WHEREAS, the Honor Hall of Recognition was established in 1980 to recognize those who have given a lifetime of service to the profession, and Wanda is the 18th inductee; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Wanda Grogan arrived in Athens in 1970 and earned her master's and specialist's degrees in home economics education at the University of Georgia, and in 1973 she was named to a newly created position focusing on continuing education programs for those in the home economics field; and

WHEREAS, for the next 20 years, with the exception of two years spent at Iowa State University earning a doctorate, Wanda developed and executed as many as 125 continuing education programs at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education and throughout Georgia and the United States; and

WHEREAS, Wanda served as an assistant to former Deans Emily Pou and Sharon Y. Nickols and as director of alumni relations for the college and was instrumental in creating Leadership FACS, an annual retreat for club presidents, College Ambassadors, and other student leaders in the college; and

WHEREAS, Wanda was among the first recipients of the Walter Barnard Hill Award for Distinguished Achievement in Service in 1992, and she was named the Walter Barnard Hill Distinguished Service Fellow in 1993; and

WHEREAS, in 1994, Wanda suffered a severe stroke that occurred while she was undergoing surgery for a brain aneurysm; and

WHEREAS, although the stroke was debilitating, Wanda persevered through months of rehabilitation, and in just a year after the operation, she organized a statewide conference for 100 stroke victims and their caregivers; and

WHEREAS, she has gone on to join St. Mary's Auxiliary and works with a program for stroke victims and a support group for people with arthritis; and

WHEREAS, she has served on the auxiliary's board of directors and as chair of its wellness group, making a special effort to deliver flowers to patient rooms at Athens Regional Medical Center and cuddle babies in the special needs nursery; and

WHEREAS, Wanda is an active member of the First Baptist Church in Athens, serving as a deacon, chairing the church's missions committee, and serving as a Stephen Minister, providing support to those facing serious family issues; and

WHEREAS, throughout her amazing career, Wanda has overcome countless hurdles through determination and a gracious spirit, and she has never hesitated to lend others her tender smile and confident strength.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize the inspiring life and career of Dr. Wanda Grogan, commend her for her outstanding services to the State of Georgia, and extend to her their sincerest best wishes for her future health and fulfillment.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Wanda Grogan and Jan M. Hathcote, Dean of the College of Family and Consumer Services of the University of Georgia.
