A RESOLUTION


Recognizing Alan C. Pope High School on its 20th anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Alan C. Pope High School was founded in 1987 as a Standard Public School of the State of Georgia accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and

WHEREAS, in 1989 Pope received the prestigious Georgia Blue Ribbon of Excellence in only its second year of operation; and

WHEREAS, Pope is located in northeast Cobb County near the city of Marietta, northwest of downtown Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, Pope has an enrollment of 2,000 students with an exceptionally active student body with over 50 percent participating in athletics and 90 percent participating in extracurricular activities; and

WHEREAS, 90 percent of graduates go on to college, 80 percent attending four-year colleges and universities while 10 percent choose two-year colleges; and

WHEREAS, Pope students achieve high scores on the Scholastic Achievement Test each year and lead Cobb County in Georgia high school graduation test scores; and

WHEREAS, 22 credits are required for graduation at Pope, 24 for graduation with distinction, and the school is on a four by four block schedule, in which students take four classes each semester earning four units of credit per semester; and

WHEREAS, Pope offers a wide range of courses, including honors and advanced placement level classes for students pursuing a college preparatory diploma and technical and vocational courses for those seeking a vocational diploma, and in 2001 began an exciting new Charter Education program (LEAP) that is tied into the curriculum, including instruction in character education and recognition of students and staff who model good character both inside and outside the classroom.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body
recognize the exceptional and important contributions in education provided by Alan C. Pope High School and congratulate it on its on 20th anniversary.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to principal Dr. Charlotte Stowers.
