A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the physicians, staff, and volunteers of Flint River Hospital; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, with the utmost heroism and grace under pressure, the personnel at Flint River Hospital in Montezuma, Georgia, came to the aid of their fellow Georgians in Americus during the devastating tornado of March 1, 2007; and

WHEREAS, on that evening, Sumter Regional Hospital of Americus received extensive structural damage from tornado winds in a series of storms that rocked the Southeast, damaging more than 400 homes and causing at least 20 casualties: nine in Georgia, including two in Americus, ten in Alabama, and one in Missouri; and

WHEREAS, the storm shattered the hospital's windows, overturned cars in the parking lot, and hurled trees, rocks, and other debris through the air, stripping part of the hospital's facade from the building; and

WHEREAS, employees from Flint River Hospital, in coordination with volunteers and first responders from throughout the area, responded with the utmost professionalism in the face of crisis and reacted with exceptional speed and efficiency to evacuate and relocate approximately 60 patients that were present at Sumter Regional Hospital on the night of the storm, three of which were in critical condition; and

WHEREAS, Flint River and Sumter Regional Hospital employees were aided by medical personnel from Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany and Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele who unhesitatingly stepped forward to assist in the evacuation; and

WHEREAS, despite the urgency and danger of the situation, every patient was evacuated successfully due to the indispensable aid of Flint River Hospital personnel.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in commending the physicians, staff, and volunteers of Flint River Hospital for their courageous and highly professional performance during the tornado of March 1, 2007, expressing gratitude for their invaluable service to the State of Georgia and the United States, and extending to them their sincerest best wishes for the future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Flint River Hospital.
