A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
and remembering the life of Vendie Hudson Hooks; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia has lost one of its most distinguished citizens with the
passing of Vendie Hudson "V.H." Hooks; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Hooks was a celebrated graduate of Swainsboro High School, the University of
Georgia, and the Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science; and
WHEREAS,
he served his country nobly in the United States Coast Guard during World War II
and as regional manager of the Veterans Administrative Office; and
WHEREAS,
he owned and operated Hooks Mortuary for 46 years along with his wife, May Jones
Hooks, and was actively involved with professional organizations associated with
the funeral home industry, including the state and the National Funeral
Directors Association; and
WHEREAS,
he served as president of the Georgia Funeral Directors Association from 1975
to 1976, and he was the county coroner for 24 years and the state mortician at
Reidsville State Prison for 20 years; and
WHEREAS,
he was a president of the Metter Kiwanis Club and a district Lieutenant Governor
of Kiwanis, a commander of the Candler County American Legion, a chairman of the
Candler County American Red Cross, and a chairman of the Candler County American
Cancer Society, and he served as a member of the board of directors of the
Pineland State Bank, the Candler County Hospital Authority, the Metter Housing
Authority, the Candler County Board of Education, and the Candler County
Historical Society; and
WHEREAS,
he served on the State Democratic Executive Committee and as a delegate to the
National Democratic Convention;
and
WHEREAS, he was a faithful member and deacon of the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church and was a clerk of the Original Upper Canoochee Association of Primitive Baptists for 20 years; and
WHEREAS, he was a faithful member and deacon of the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church and was a clerk of the Original Upper Canoochee Association of Primitive Baptists for 20 years; and
WHEREAS,
in life he commanded the esteem of his fellow Georgians; at his death it is
fitting and proper that we offer our sympathies to his family and
friends.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join
together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Vendie Hudson Hooks
and extend their most sincere condolences to his family.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Vendie
Hudson Hooks.
