A RESOLUTION


Honoring Pete and Lillie Wood, and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Pete Wood has authored a wonderful book called The Paper Boy with the assistance of his wife Lillie; and

WHEREAS, Pete began making notes on the book in 1988 and it was published 18 years later in 2006; and

WHEREAS; Lillie organized the material and did all the typing on the 678 page manuscript; and

WHEREAS, the book has been praised as a loving look at a South of small towns, where everyone knew each other, as well as a love letter to Smyrna; and

WHEREAS, Pete grew up in Smyrna, Georgia, in the middle of the Twentieth Century, and tells the story from the vantage point of observing the world through the eyes of the paper boy tossing the Atlanta Constitution during the time of World War II; and

WHEREAS, The Paper Boy documents life in Smyrna street by street, focusing on families who lived in Smyrna between 1938 and 1951, when Mr. Wood graduated from high school; and

WHEREAS, over the decades, as a banker, a founding trustee of the hospital authority that built Cobb General, a founding trustee of what is now WellStar Health System, a city councilman, and member of First Baptist Church of Smyrna for more than 70 years, Pete Wood saw the same families through joys and hardships, through wars and good times; and

WHEREAS, the old places have gone, people are gone, memories faded, but the paper boy knows, and he tells, and the old places are rebuilt, the people live, and the memories are sharp and clear on the pages of The Paper Boy; and

WHEREAS, Pete and Lillie Wood have given so graciously to their community and the State of Georgia through their talents and hard work, bringing to life the story of a place and time in Georgia history, and it is fitting this body recognize Pete and Lillie Wood.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize Pete and Lillie Wood for their outstanding service to the State of Georgia, and extend to them their gratitude.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Pete and Lillie Wood.
