RESOLUTION
Celebrating
the centennial anniversary of Toccoa Falls College; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Toccoa Falls College began as a small mountain school in 1907, and over the
course of 100 years, it has become one of the nation's leading fully accredited
interdenominational Christian colleges; and
WHEREAS,
the college celebrates its 100th anniversary with a number of events
commemorating the many struggles and victories the school has experienced since
it was cofounded by Dr. Richard Forrest and his wife, Evelyn, as the Golden
Valley Institute in Golden Valley, North Carolina; and
WHEREAS,
realizing the need for a more spacious location that was more convenient to the
railroad, Dr. Forrest used his last ten-dollar bill as a down payment on the
$25,000 note for the Haddock Inn and 100 acres of property on January 1, 1911,
holding to his conviction that Toccoa Falls was the place that God had chosen
for a great institution of learning; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Forrest referred to the school as a "tree of God's planting" and proudly
stated that "the sun never sets on the graduates of Toccoa Falls College," and
after building and growing determinedly despite both fire and flood, the school
continues to flourish to this day; and
WHEREAS,
located among the streams and foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, Toccoa
Falls College covers a 1,000 acre campus that features beautiful, natural
scenery, including a waterfall measuring 186 feet, a height greater than Niagara
Falls; and
WHEREAS,
Toccoa Falls College is an independent, nonprofit educational institution that
trains men and women for vocational and professional Christian ministries and
works with many evangelical and ecumenical Christian groups; and
WHEREAS,
the school currently boasts 25 majors and 35 minors in nine different schools:
Arts & Sciences, Bible & Theology, Business Administration, Christian
Education, Communication, Counseling, Music, Teacher Education, and World
Missions; and
WHEREAS,
Toccoa Falls College offers a rigorous and personally rewarding education with
an impressive student to faculty ratio of 15:1, and in addition to its generous
financial aid opportunities, the school has maintained a tuition cost
significantly lower than the national average; and
WHEREAS,
in addition to its stellar offerings in academics, music, and the arts, the
Toccoa Falls College Eagles athletic teams compete in NCCAA, Division II events
in sports such as men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country,
women's volleyball, men's baseball, and golf; and
WHEREAS,
the mission of Toccoa Falls College is to glorify God through seeking and
developing Christian servant leaders who will impact their world with the love
and message of Jesus Christ, and as Toccoa Falls alumni enter Christian
ministries and secular vocations around the globe, they become shining beacons
of hope and truth to a confused and lost world.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
celebrating the centennial anniversary of Toccoa Falls College; honoring the
rich heritage of its 100 years; commending the faculty, staff, and
administrators for their commitment to educational excellence; and extending to
Toccoa Falls College their sincerest best wishes for continued growth and
success.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Toccoa Falls College.
