A RESOLUTION


Commending Earl H. Cheek; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Earl H. Cheek has provided a lifetime of service to his family, community, and country and was recently honored by the attendance of over 60 relatives and special friends at a dinner to celebrate his 90th birthday; and

WHEREAS, there is great affection and respect for Earl Cheek, well known as "Mr. Cheek" and "Gramps" to a host of young people; and

WHEREAS, Earl H. Cheek grew up in Dodge County as the oldest of five brothers with five older sisters and enjoys talking about the days when they all picked cotton; and

WHEREAS, he served his country in World War II and continued in the Air Force Reserves, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel; and

WHEREAS, he attended Middle Georgia College and went on to the University of Georgia where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1937 and a Master´s in Education in 1951; and

WHEREAS, he was named to the University of Georgia Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2000 for his many contributions in the field of vocational agriculture; and

WHEREAS, he served for 37 years as a teacher, during which time he established two vocational agriculture departments and trained and supervised ten University of Georgia student teachers in vocational agriculture; and

WHEREAS, most of his teaching career was spent at Perry High School, and he is a charter member of the Georgia Vocational and Extension Service Coordinating Committee and served on the state Agriculture Education Committee; and

WHEREAS, he was also awarded the National FFA Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award and was named Georgia Retired Educator of the year in 1997; and

WHEREAS, he also served as an administrative aide to United States Senator Sam Nunn and as field director for Congressman Richard Ray; and

WHEREAS, he and his wife, Norma, live in Perry and enjoy spending time with their large family and many friends; and

WHEREAS, Earl H. Cheek is a beloved man and has provided a lifetime of service to his family, community, and state, and it is only fitting that this body recognize his accomplishments.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Earl H. Cheek for his outstanding contributions to education and the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Earl H. Cheek.
