A RESOLUTION


Recognizing March 6, 2007, as "Georgia Rides to the Capitol Day"; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, cycling increases physical work capacity, significantly reduces harmful cholesterol levels, reduces obesity, and lessens risk of heart disease or attacks; and

WHEREAS, the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association supports and encourages all metropolitan Atlanta cities to participate in the 2007 "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" departing from the cities of Decatur, Marietta, and Roswell during the 2007 legislative session; and

WHEREAS, working alongside regional and state entities, the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association passed a resolution supporting the continued development of regional bike and pedestrian systems and for the creation of new and connecting on-road facilities and off-road and multi-use pathways; and

WHEREAS, over 1,841 Georgia "Share the Road" specialty motor vehicle license plates have been issued in the first eight months of their availability and funds will go toward motorist and cyclist safety, education, and awareness programs; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia Department of Transportation supports cycling as a cost-efficient means of transportation for Georgia's residents that is a means of congestion mitigation and environmentally-friendly mobility; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia Department of Transportation promotes working with local jurisdictions to improve cycling conditions by building or upgrading roads and facilities; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia Department of Transportation encourages economic development opportunities that enhance bicycle and pedestrian mobility; and

WHEREAS, access to facilities promoting bicycle and pedestrian mobility enhances the quality of life in Georgia's communities; and

WHEREAS, facilities that promote bicycle and pedestrian mobility, such as the Silver Comet Rail-to-Trail and the 17th Street bike lanes and sidewalks, also promote economic development and tourism surrounding the facilities; and

WHEREAS, the Tour de Georgia, a sponsor of the 2007 "Georgia Rides to the Capitol," has drawn more than 2.3 million spectators and had a direct economic impact of $26 million on the State of Georgia in 2006.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize March 6, 2007, as "Georgia Rides to the Capitol Day."

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association and organizers of the "Georgia Rides to the Capitol."
