A RESOLUTION


Commending Lieutenant Colonel Edgar George David, Jr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Edgar George David, Jr., is a decorated veteran, a talented community leader, and a devoted family man of Dawson County, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Edgar George David, Jr., was born on January 13, 1929, in Tampa, Florida, to Edna Mona Anderson and Edgar George David, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, he is a celebrated graduate of Castle Heights Military Academy, North Georgia College, and the University of Georgia, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology; and

WHEREAS, he served nobly in multiple conflicts abroad with the United States Infantry, earning a number of military honors, including The Master Parachutist Badge, The Combat Infantryman Badge with Star, The Ranger Tab, The Air Medal, The Korean Service Medal, and The Vietnam Service Medal, The Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and the Vietnamese Parachutist Badge; and

WHEREAS, he served as a platoon leader in the Korean War and as a special advisor in the Vietnam War, retiring in 1971 as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Special Forces; and

WHEREAS, he received a Master of Education degree in Recreation and Park Administration and a Master's degree in Curriculum and Supervision from the University of Georgia, and returned to Dawson County in 1974; and

WHEREAS, he returned from his military career ready to serve his country at home with the same diligence and passion that he had exhibited abroad, serving as a member of the Board of Education for eight years, a member of the Board of Elections, a member of the Board of Equalization, a president of the Booster Club, a president and secretary of the Dawsonville Lions Club, a charter member of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce, an advisor to the Dawson County Homeowners Association, and a secretary-treasurer of the Dawson County Development Authority and Industrial Building Authority; and

WHEREAS, Mr. David was a founder and a charter member of the Board of Directors of the Etowah Water and Sewer Authority, a cofounder of the Dawson County Humane Society, and was instrumental in founding the Dawson County Republican Party, and as chairman of the Dawson Company Municipal Planning Commission, he cowrote the Dawson County zoning rules and regulations; and

WHEREAS, for his many outstanding contributions to the Dawson County community, he was honored with the Dawson County Stewardship Award; and

WHEREAS, Mr. David's dedication to serving his country is surpassed only by his intense devotion to his family; and

WHEREAS, he shared 49 years of wonderful marriage with the late Marie Elinor Alston, and he has provided a wealth of loving guidance to his five daughters, Jennifer, Dana, Claire, Melanie, and Dorian, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandson; and

WHEREAS, he remains a strong presence in the public life of Dawson County, maintaining his longtime support as a pillar of the community despite having celebrated his 78th birthday on January 13, 2007; and

WHEREAS, as he has commanded the esteem of several generations of Georgians, he has brought honor to his family, community, and the State of Georgia.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in recognizing the amazing life of Lieutenant Colonel Edgar George David, Jr., commending his countless valuable contributions to the State of Georgia and the United States, and extending to him the best of wishes for his future health and fulfillment.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Lieutenant Colonel Edgar George David, Jr.
