A
RESOLUTION
Urging
the United States Congress to reform U.S. sugar policy; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the manufacturers of foods and beverages that contain sugar are extremely
important to the economy of the State of Georgia, providing thousands of jobs
and millions of dollars of annual economic impact; and
WHEREAS,
current U.S. sugar policy will be subject to greater scrutiny during
Congressional consideration of the 2007 Farm Bill; and
WHEREAS,
the future U.S. sugar policy should be based on greater transparency and market
orientation; and
WHEREAS,
ethanol derived from sugarcane, sugar beet, and corn production in America holds
promise for helping to meet our national goals of reducing our nation´s
dependence on foreign oil; and
WHEREAS,
incorporating production safety nets for farm families that cultivate these
traditional food crops will prove more beneficial if resources are directed to
energy production.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body
urge members of the Georgia congressional delegation to work together to bring the type of reasonable reform to U.S. sugar policy that will in turn stabilize our foreign trade and domestic economic policies.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to each member of
Georgia´s congressional delegation.
