A RESOLUTION


Urging the Board of Regents and chancellor of the University System of Georgia to maintain the current military program at the senior military college of Georgia, North Georgia College and State University; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, known as "The West Point of the South," the military science program at North Georgia College and State University is well recognized for its production of military leaders for the United States Army and Georgia National Guard; and

WHEREAS, since 1873, the military science program at North Georgia College and State University has served as only one of six senior military colleges in the nation; and

WHEREAS, participation in the military science program is mandatory for male students living on campus, and such students are known as the Corps of Cadets; and

WHEREAS, a diverse university, North Georgia College and State University is coeducational and offers students a variety of clubs, student organizations, and activities and holds the distinction of being the first public college in Georgia to admit women and the first to have a female graduate; and

WHEREAS, 13 percent of the student population are enrolled as cadets and the university boasts at least 36 generals and admirals among its alumni; and

WHEREAS, but one distinction separates North Georgia College and State University from every other university in this state, and that is the school´s military science program; and

WHEREAS, the military science program at North Georgia College and State University has a history of excellence and prominence not only in this state, but in this country; and

WHEREAS, the best interests of this state include preservation of the military science program at North Georgia College and State University.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body urge the Board of Regents and chancellor of the University System of Georgia to maintain the current military program at the senior military college of Georgia, North Georgia College and State University.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Board of Regents and chancellor of the University System of Georgia.
