A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the staff of the Georgia Archives for rediscovering Georgia´s official copy of the Declaration of Independence; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on January 18, 1777, the Continental Congress ordered that copies of the Declaration of Independence be sent to each of the thirteen states to be placed on record; and

WHEREAS, the government of the State of Georgia recorded the document in its official records on March 2, 1777; and

WHEREAS, the Secretary of State preserved the Declaration among the records of this state for 230 years; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Greg Jarrell and other alert staff members of the Georgia Archives recently rediscovered the exact whereabouts of the Declaration and restored it to its rightful place among the historical documents of the State of Georgia.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in commending Mr. Greg Jarrell, the staff of the Georgia Archives, and the Secretary of State for their dedicated professionalism and service to the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Secretary of State and to the staff of the Georgia Archives.
