RESOLUTION
Celebrating
the 50th anniversary of Easter Seals Southern Georgia; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
a mother from Albany, Georgia, Mrs. Mildred Huie worked diligently in 1956 to
coordinate her community to establish Easter Seals Southern Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
Easter Seals Southern Georgia began as the only medical rehabilitation center
for the region and remained so for many years; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. John Meier served as the first medical director for the organization, and,
following his untimely death, Connie Meier and John Meier II served the
organization as president of the board of directors; and
WHEREAS,
in 1982 with help from Senator Al Holloway, Easter Seals Southern Georgia
established a vocational training program aimed at helping people with
disabilities become productive, contributing citizens; and
WHEREAS,
in 1993 Easter Seals Southern Georgia became one of the first respite care
programs in the state and is now the largest provider of services to children
and adults with disabilities in Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
since 1993 Easter Seals Southern Georgia has successfully submitted and received
over $4 million in funding from the United States Department of Housing and
Urban Development for the construction of affordable, accessible housing for
young adults with disabilities; and
WHEREAS,
in 2004 Easter Seals Southern Georgia established "Megan’s House" and
replicated this unique respite home for children with disabilities in 2006;
and
WHEREAS,
Easter Seals Southern Georgia provides exceptional services, ensuring all people
with disabilities or special needs and their families have equal opportunities
to live, learn, work, and play in their communities, and served over 2,200
individuals during 2006; and
WHEREAS,
Easter Seals Southern Georgia is celebrating its 50th anniversary in
2007.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body
congratulate and recognize Easter Seals Southern Georgia for its tremendous
contributions to the special needs community in Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Easter Seals Southern
Georgia.
