Senate Resolution 1253

A RESOLUTION


Commending Mr. Lauren N. Nobles; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mr. Lauren N. Nobles was born on August 30, 1937, in Nicholls, Georgia, and attended the Georgia Academy for the Blind, where he learned piano, piano tuning, and chair caning in addition to a full-time academic education; and

WHEREAS, he attended South Georgia College and graduated with honors from the University of Georgia with a degree in journalism, and he earned a minor degree and has a major interest in political science; and

WHEREAS, he began his career in radio when he helped to organize radio station WOKA in Douglas, Georgia, in 1962, later becoming the station´s news director and manager, and in 1978 he began to host an on-air talk show called "Coffee Break," which he continued until his retirement in 1994; and

WHEREAS, upon retirement Mr. Nobles moved to St. Simons Island, where he began doing a three-hour talk show called "Straight Talk" on WGIG, which continues to the present as "Straight Talk in the House"; and

WHEREAS, he was chosen as the Lions Club man of the year and won numerous awards from the National Association of Broadcasters and the Georgia Association of Broadcasters, and during his career he interviewed many famous people, including Loretta Lynn, Charlie Pride, several Georgia governors, and most notably Senator Jeff Chapman; and

WHEREAS, beginning in college and throughout the years he played in several bands, among them Nobles and the Knights and The Good Old Boys, playing gigs throughout the state; and

WHEREAS, he is the father of three children, Dr. Candi Nobles-James, Shayne Nobles, and Joshua Brooke Nobles, and grandfather to eight, with another on the way.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Mr. Lauren N. Nobles for his many achievements and contributions to his community and the state.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Lauren N. Nobles.
