By: Senator Tolleson of the 20th

A RESOLUTION

Expressing regret at the passing of Foy Evans; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia recently lost one of its finest and most distinguished citizens with the passing of Foy Evans; and

WHEREAS, he was the editor and publisher of The Daily Sun in Warner Robins, Georgia, and Mr. Evans got his start in Macon in the sports department of The Telegraph, then known as The News, before moving to Florida to pursue a law degree; and

WHEREAS, after the war, he moved to middle Georgia, where he saw opportunity for a young entrepreneur like himself; and

WHEREAS, his newspaper, which he started in 1949, put together by a few veterans and reporters fresh out of college, was still routinely winning Georgia Press Association awards for journalism in 1973 and was widely considered one of the top two or three papers of its size in this state; and

WHEREAS, he ran the weekly Sun by himself, at first, gathering and writing the news, selling the ads and subscriptions, and delivering the papers; and

WHEREAS, a couple of years later, he sold the newspaper, but what the employees learned about journalism carried them much further than they expected when seeking new careers; one reporter went on to a career of overseas assignments as a foreign correspondent, wire service reporting, and finally to become a thriving newspaper publisher in California; another is currently an editor at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; and one traveled to Chicago and Washington before coming back and settling down in the very same building that once housed The Daily Sun; and

WHEREAS, his significant organizational and leadership talents, his remarkable patience and diplomacy, his keen sense of vision, and his sensitivity to the needs of the citizens of this state earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and associates; and

WHEREAS, this distinguished man gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern for his fellow citizens, and he possessed the vast wisdom which only comes through experience and the strength of character which is achieved through overcoming the many challenges of life; and

WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness, and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body express their deepest and most sincere regret at the passing of Foy Evans.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Foy Evans.
