RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Mr. William Pope "Billy" Langdale; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mr. William Pope "Billy" Langdale has served this state with distinction for 25
years as a member of the State Transportation Board and during his tenure he
never missed a meeting; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Langdale was elected to the board in 1988, and served as its chairman from
April, 1995 until April, 1996; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Langdale was born on February 10, 1921, in Valdosta, Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
he graduated from Valdosta High School and went on to attend the University of
Georgia, 1938 to 1940; Mercer University, 1940; Valdosta State College, 1940;
the University of Georgia, 1941; and the Naval War College, 1951;
and
WHEREAS,
he served his country honorably in the United States Marines from 1942 until
1950, receiving the Bronze Star in the Battle of Piva Forks, Bougainville, and
retired as a Lieutenant Colonel; and
WHEREAS,
he is senior vice president of The Langdale Company, and has other affiliations
with Langdale Ford Company, Langdale Timber Company, and Langdale Forest
Products Company; and
WHEREAS,
he was chairman of the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners, serving from 1961
to 1976; director of Flue-Cured Tobacco Stabilization Corporation Board, serving
from 1971 to 1973; and member of the Lowndes County Industrial Authority Board,
serving from 1961 to 1988; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Langdale is a member of the Valdosta Country Club, the Elks Club, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Masonic Order, Knights Templar, Shriners, and the First Baptist Church in Valdosta, Georgia; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Langdale is a member of the Valdosta Country Club, the Elks Club, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Masonic Order, Knights Templar, Shriners, and the First Baptist Church in Valdosta, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Langdale is widowed and has three wonderful children, William Pope Langdale,
Jr., Robert Harley Langdale, and Mary Jacquelyn Langdale Dickey.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize
Mr. William Pope "Billy" Langdale and commend him for his long and valuable
service to the State Transportation Board, his community, and the
state.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. William Pope "Billy"
Langdale.
