A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Coach Dave Odom upon the occasion of his retirement; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Coach Dave Odom is a native of Goldsboro, North Carolina, and began his athletic career as a three-sport standout, serving as captain of his football, basketball, and baseball squads as a senior at Goldsboro High School; and

WHEREAS, he took his talent and love of athletics to Guilford College in the early 1960's, and there, he was a quarterback on the football team for three years, while also playing on the basketball team for four years; and

WHEREAS, following his college career, he began coaching at his alma mater, Goldsboro High School while working toward a graduate degree in physical education at East Carolina University, and he received his master's degree in 1969 and accepted a head coach position at Durham High School before making his debut on the collegiate coaching scene as assistant coach at Wake Forest University; and

WHEREAS, he left Wake Forest University for a three-year position at East Carolina University before moving on to coach at the University of Virginia and left that position to become head coach at Wake Forest University, marking only the second time in ACC history that an assistant at one school became head coach at another, and finally, he settled at the University of South Carolina as head coach; and

WHEREAS, the University of South Carolina's 90-63 win over Radford University notched Coach Odom's 400th career win in his 22 years as head coach, with 38 wins at East Carolina University, 240 at Wake Forest University, and 127 at the University of South Carolina; and

WHEREAS, he is the 29th active coach to reach 400 wins and has been recognized as the winningest-all-time coach in the SEC; and
WHEREAS, he was named SEC Coach of the Year in 2004; ACC Coach of the Year in 1991, 1994, and 1995; District Coach of the Year in 1991, 1993, and 1994; and National Coach of the Year in 1995; and

WHEREAS, Coach Odom and his lovely wife, Lynn, have two sons, Lane and Ryan; and

WHEREAS, he is a devoted family man, a dedicated member of his community, and a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness; and

WHEREAS, Coach Dave Odom will be retiring at the end of the 2007-2008 season, and, during his outstanding career, he has recruited, mentored, and coached hundreds of athletes.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join together to recognize Coach Dave Odom and commend him on his exemplary and outstanding career in coaching, and extend their sincere wishes for health and happiness in the future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is hereby authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Coach Dave Odom.
