Senate Resolution 103
By: Senator Hooks of the 14th

A RESOLUTION

Recognize and celebrate the sesquicentennial of Schley County, Georgia; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Schley County, located in west central Georgia, southeast of Columbus, was created in 1857 and proudly named for Governor William Schley, who served as governor of Georgia from 1835 to 1837; and

WHEREAS, Ellaville, Schley's county seat and the only incorporated town in the county, was named for Ella Burton, the daughter of the man who sold the land for the town's location; and

WHEREAS, Schley County has an illustrative 150-year history of playing a part in the history of Georgia including the settlement of southwestern Georgia in the 1830s and 1840s, providing three companies of troops during the Civil War, and spreading commerce to neighboring Americus, Buena Vista, and Andersonville; and

WHEREAS, the Ellaville Sun, established by Raymond Duncan in 1937 was a frequently quoted source in this state and even for national publications, providing Georgia with a well-written and conscience-driven view of Schley at mid-century; and

WHEREAS, Schley County continues to be a growing and vital area of Georgia, and it is only fitting that it be recognized on the occasion of its 150th birthday.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize and congratulate Schley County on the occasion of its sesquicentennial.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Schley County.
