RESOLUTION
Recognizing
the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity was founded December 26, 1848, at Miami
University in Oxford, Ohio, with a sincere dedication to the precepts of
friendship, sound learning, and rectitude; and
WHEREAS,
since its inception, Phi Delta Theta has guided over 225,000 college men through
a program of commitment and excellence, cultivating high standards of academic
achievement and moral integrity among its members; and
WHEREAS,
the fraternity has produced a long, illustrious list of leaders, public
servants, and other notable personalities, including President Benjamin
Harrison, Vice President Adlai Stephenson, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice
Frederick Vinson, architect Frank Lloyd Wright, astronaut Neil Armstrong, actor
Burt Reynolds, Dennis the Menace creator Hank Ketcham, William Randolph Hearst,
and J. Willard Marriott as well as such Georgians as Governor George Busbee,
U.S. Senators Sam Nunn and Wyche Fowler, Atlanta Olympic Committee President
Billy Payne, Capricorn Records founder Phil Walden, and Congressmen Howard
Callaway and D. Douglas Barnard; and
WHEREAS,
this brotherhood demonstrates its sustained devotion to community service,
raising thousands of dollars each year for such noble causes as the American
Cancer Society and also the ALS Foundation which is the fraternity's national
philanthropy, chosen in honor of Phi Delta Theta member and baseball great, Lou
Gehrig; and
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia welcomes the members of Phi Delta Theta and their families
to our community for the General Officers Conference on February 9,
2007.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join to
extend a heartfelt welcome to the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and commend the
organization for its continued commitment to personal excellence and community
service.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Phi Delta Theta
Fraternity.
