RESOLUTION
Commending
Reverend Thurmond N. Tillman for his life of dedicated service to his church and
recognizing him on the anniversary of his 25th year of service to his
congregation; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Thurmond N. Tillman was born the beloved son of Reverend and Mrs. Eugene C.
Tillman, Sr., and was raised in Brunswick, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
he is a graduate of Glynn Academy and Brunswick Junior College, and he received
his Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice with a minor in
Business Management from the State University of West Georgia in Carrollton,
Georgia, earned a Master of Divinity from Morehouse College, School of Religion
in Atlanta, Georgia, and currently serves as a licensed minister;
and
WHEREAS,
in 1982 Thurmond N. Tillman became pastor of the First African Baptist Church,
Franklin Square, in Savannah, Georgia, and he has been leading the church
through his inspirational preaching and teaching for more than 25 years;
and
WHEREAS,
Reverend Tillman´s dedication to community is demonstrated by his service
on many associations and committees, including his service as President of the
General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia, Congress of Christian
Education, Vice Moderator of the Berean Missionary Baptist Association,
Treasurer of the Savannah Baptist Ministers Union, Convener of the Hundred Black
Churches Connected, Convener of the 1000 Churches Connected in the Savannah
area, former President of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of
Chatham County, Chairman of the West Broad Street Y.M.C.A., Board Member of the
African American Monument Association and Goodwill Industries of the Coastal
Empire, Former Vice Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for the Housing
Authority of Savannah, Founder and CEO of Amen Enterprises, Chaplain for the
Savannah Police Department, Chaplain and life member of Kappa Alpha Psi, and
many others; and
WHEREAS,
Reverend Tillman has lived a life dedicated to Christian education programs and
community and spiritual service, embodying his personal commitment to his fellow
man, and he exemplifies extraordinary Christian leadership in the Christian
community; and
WHEREAS,
Reverend Tillman is a devoted husband to his wife of 26 years, Lawanda Copeland,
and a loving father to their three children, Trenile Nicole, Lauren Christina,
and Tremil Delano.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize the service of this dedicated spiritual leader, commend
Reverend Thurmond N. Tillman for his many achievements and contributions, and
congratulate him on his 25 years of service with the First African Baptist
Church.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Reverend
Thurmond N. Tillman.
