A RESOLUTION


Commending Mrs. Lenore G. Shackelford; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Lenore G. Shackelford is a distinguished resident of Quitman, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, she served as a school counselor for 30 years and as a school teacher for eight years and was the first counselor appointed by the State Board of Education through the new development of the state guidance counselor department; and

WHEREAS, as a school counselor, she had counseling sessions with every student in a school having an enrollment of 600 or more students and ensured that all of them had plans for life after graduation; even now in retirement, she is sought for her wisdom and counsel and continues to give advice to young adults and others in her community; and

WHEREAS, she led a prison ministry for several years, providing counseling and Bible study for inmates, taking dinners at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and ministering to them in other ways to promote changes in lifestyles after release from prison; and

WHEREAS, she assisted many residents with voter registration and still encourages others to vote; and

WHEREAS, she was instrumental and persistent in obtaining recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr., Day in Brooks County schools, and she also was a leader in getting a street in Quitman named after Dr. King; and

WHEREAS, she has received numerous honors for her public service and continues to serve her community through her leadership in local government bodies, numerous civic organizations, and fraternal organizations, including serving on the Quitman Planning Commission.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Mrs. Lenore G. Shackelford for her many achievements and contributions to the welfare of her community and this state.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Lenore G. Shackelford.
