A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life of Henry Scott Verner; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Henry Scott Verner was born September 8, 1924, in Retreat, South Carolina, at the Verner family home place, "Bachelor's Retreat"; and

WHEREAS, his family moved to Georgia in 1926, eventually settling in Watkinsville where he worked on the family dairy operation until December, 1948; and

WHEREAS, Henry was joined in marriage to Sara Davis Breedlove on September 6, 1947, and together they treasured seven children, 18 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, in 1949, he began managing the Morgan County farm operations of his father-in-law, T.R. Breedlove, and did so until 1975, when he established Verner Farms, a 200 acre diversified beef cattle, poultry, and bermuda hay enterprise; and

WHEREAS, Henry's son, Alan, joined the venture in 1979, and together they worked to establish the successful 800 acre poultry, beef cattle, quality hay, and bermuda sprigging enterprise that is Verner Farms today; and

WHEREAS, begun in 1958, his service on the Walton EMC Board of Directors spanned a remarkable 45 years, during which he served on most of the board's committees and as the board's president/chairman, vice president, and secretary-treasurer; and

WHEREAS, further service to his community included membership on the Morgan County Planning and Zoning Commission, the Northeast Georgia Regional Economic Development Board, the Morgan County Farm Bureau, and the Farmers Home Administration; and

WHEREAS, in 2005, he received Morgan County's first "Yellow Dog Democrat" Award from a distinguished former member of this body, the Honorable E. Roy Lambert, on behalf of Morgan County Democrats at their inaugural Jefferson–Jackson dinner; and

WHEREAS, Henry was an active member of churches in Rutledge and Madison and was widely known throughout the community as "Peppermint Pop," a nickname bestowed upon him because he always had peppermint candy to share with whomever he met; and

WHEREAS, this fine gentleman truly loved the land that he farmed and was wholly devoted to his family, friends, community, and Savior.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body honor the life of Henry Scott Verner and express condolences to his family on the loss of this great Georgian.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Henry Scott Verner.
