RESOLUTION
Commending
the Reverend Charles Lee White, Jr.; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Reverend Charles Lee White, Jr., is an inspirational community leader and
servant of God and his fellow man; and
WHEREAS,
he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies from the University of
South Carolina, where he served as Lay Campus Minister, and entered Gammon
Theological Seminary of the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta,
Georgia, where he was conferred a Masters of Divinity with a concentration in
Christian Education; and
WHEREAS,
the Reverend Charles Lee White, Jr., is an ordained Elder and Full Member of the
South Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church and served six
years as Senior Pastor of the Clover Parish, which includes the congregations of
the Clover Chapel, Green Pond, and Mount Harmony United Methodist Churches,
where he led the development of several church and community initiatives;
and
WHEREAS,
the Reverend Charles Lee White, Jr., served with distinction as Director of the
Southeast Region of the NAACP headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, since 1999, and
he has made numerous contributions to make the Southeastern United States a
better place to live for all people; and
WHEREAS,
the Reverend Charles Lee White, Jr., has been recently appointed to serve as the
National Director of Field Operations of the NAACP; and
WHEREAS,
the Reverend Charles Lee White, Jr., is also a proud member of Eta Lambda
Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity in Atlanta, and he sits on the Board of
Trustees for the African American Male Research, Success, and Leadership
initiative at the University of West Georgia; and
WHEREAS, the Reverend Charles Lee White, Jr., is the founder of Brothers United for Change, a ministry that has gained national attention; and
WHEREAS, the Reverend Charles Lee White, Jr., is the founder of Brothers United for Change, a ministry that has gained national attention; and
WHEREAS,
the Reverend's civil rights undertakings include becoming the first African
American member of the Clover Rotary Club and the first African American member
of the University of South Carolina Chaplains Association; and
WHEREAS,
the Reverend won a precedent setting 1993 verdict against the Buffalo Room in
North Augusta, South Carolina, for refusing to serve him and five other NAACP
officials because of their race; and
WHEREAS,
that was the first time in the state's history that an African American citizen
recovered monetary damages for race discrimination using the claim of outrage;
and
WHEREAS,
the suit led to a stronger Public Accommodations Law being adopted by the South
Carolina Legislature; and
WHEREAS,
the Reverend Charles Lee White, Jr., is a resident of Ellenwood, Georgia, and he
is the faithful husband of Adrienne and the loving father of Dwayne, who serves
in the United States army, and Alexander, a recent graduate of the University of
South Carolina and a member of the United States air force reserve.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Reverend Charles Lee White, Jr., the National Director of
Field Operations of the NAACP for his innumerable good works in the name of
social justice, congratulate him upon the occasion of the dedication of the 55th
Annual Civil Rights Advocacy Training Institute, and extend to him their
sincerest best wishes for the future.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Reverend
Charles Lee White, Jr.
