A RESOLUTION


Honoring and remembering the life of Lonzo Judson Akin; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia lost one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Lonzo Judson Akin on June 22, 2005, at the age of 80; and

WHEREAS, he was the son of the late Horace and Clella Akin and he was preceded in death by his son, Steve Akin; and

WHEREAS, L.J. graduated from Chamblee High School in 1941 and Auburn University in 1949; and

WHEREAS, he was a member of the Atlanta Athletic Club since 1959 where he enjoyed playing golf and cards with his many friends; and

WHEREAS, L. J. cofounded Akin and Flanders, Inc., with Frank Flanders in 1963, creating a long and lasting relationship; and

WHEREAS, he was a past president of the Georgia Chapter of the Associated General Contractors; and

WHEREAS, he established the L. Judson Akin Presidential Scholarship for students of the same circumstances as he had as a young person wanting an education but not having available funds; and

WHEREAS, L. J. is survived by his wife, Patsy B. Akin; son Judson C. Akin; son Mark and his wife Gina Burkhalter; daughter Marsha Akin Loftin; daughter Natalie B. and her husband Peter Hayes; brother Dean Akin and his wife Wanda Akin; sister Lila and her husband Wendell Elrod; grandchildren Clint and Heather Loftin, Erin and Nick Curry, Ansley and Lee Willis, J.P., Ben, and Bailey Hayes, and Natalie, Sam, and Olivia Burkhalter; and one great-grandson, Logan Judson Curry; and

WHEREAS, he was a true patriarch to his children, grandchildren, family, and friends and will be dearly missed; and it is fitting and proper that we extend sympathy to his family and friends.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Lonzo Judson Akin and extend their most sincere condolences to his family.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Lonzo Judson Akin.
