RESOLUTION
Commending
the Clayton State University Lakers men's basketball team; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the 2006-2007 Clayton State University Lakers basketball team has established a
standard of athletic excellence with equal emphases on character and academics;
and
WHEREAS,
this superlative team completed a whirlwind season, ending with the best record
in school history, an astonishing 24-8, earning its first trip ever to the NCAA
Division II National Tournament; and
WHEREAS,
the road to the NCAA Division II National Tournament was long and difficult, but
the Lakers posted a 17-0 record to open the season with a school record for the
most consecutive wins in a season, maintaining a national ranking at the number
two spot for six weeks; and
WHEREAS,
the 2006-2007 Clayton State University Lakers basketball team included the
following outstanding athletes: Rod Venner, Austin DeAngelis, Brandon Kelley,
Trey Goss, Cory Cameron, John Beugnot, Todd McLaurin, Michael Sloan, Luis
Rodriquez, Jordan Windisch, Jeff Trotter, Brian Kelly, Jaquas Dobbs, and
Aristide Sawadogo; and
WHEREAS,
the phenomenal performance of the team is a clear indication of the outstanding
athletic ability, the dedication and hard work, and the unity of purpose and
spirit of each member of the team; their superb offensive and defensive talents;
the astute guidance and direction of Head Coach Gordon Gibbons and Assistant
Coaches Brent Buchanan and Andy Harre; and the generous support of university
president Dr. Thomas K. Harden and athletic director Mason Barfield;
and
WHEREAS,
as they have performed with courage and determination, the Clayton State
University Lakers have brought honor to Clayton State University, Clayton
County, the City of Morrow, and the State of Georgia.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend the Clayton State University Lakers men's basketball team for
its unparalleled determination, tenacity, and character; commend Coach Gordon
Gibbons in his fifth season of dedicated coaching at Clayton State University;
and extend their sincerest best wishes for continued success.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Clayton State
University.
