A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Caribbean Americans on the occasion of Caribbean American Heritage Month; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, emigration from the Caribbean region to the American Colonies began as early as 1619, and since that time millions of people have come from the Caribbean region to the United States; and

WHEREAS, the people of the Caribbean, as well as Caribbean Americans, faced the many obstacles and hardships of slavery and had to struggle for their freedom; and

WHEREAS, there have been many famous and influential Caribbean Americans in the history of the United States, and Caribbean Americans have contributed greatly to education, fine arts, business, literature, journalism, sports, fashion, politics, government, the military, science, technology, and many other areas positively affecting the lives of citizens in this state; and

WHEREAS, Caribbean Americans have played an active role in the civil rights movement and continue to make important contributions to social and political issues facing Georgia and our nation; and

WHEREAS, June has been recognized by the United States Congress as Caribbean American Heritage Month, and it is only fitting and proper that these great citizens and this outstanding culture be appropriately recognized and in their honor ceremonies, celebrations, and other activities should be held.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body hereby recognize Caribbean Americans on the occasion of the 2007 Caribbean American Heritage Month to be held in June and commend them for their many contributions to the State of Georgia and to the United States.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia Caribbean American Heritage Association, Inc.
