RESOLUTION
Recognizing
the 2007 Soy Unica Soy Latina Rally and Celebration; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
on May 31, 2007, over 500 Latina girls, their families, and friends will gather
for the annual Soy Unica Soy Latina Rally and Celebration to be held at the
DeKalb Event Center adjacent to Plaza Fiesta in Doraville, Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
there are almost 7 million Latina girls under the age of 18 living in the United
States and Latina girls rank higher than any other racial or ethnic group in
rates of pregnancy, depression, and suicide; and
WHEREAS,
to combat these, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
and the Center for Substance for Abuse Prevention have developed "¡Soy
Unica! ¡Soy Latina!," a bilingual campaign aimed at Latina girls ages 9 to
14 and their mothers; and
WHEREAS,
Soy Unica Soy Latina is designed to help Latino families build and enhance their
daughters´ self-esteem, mental health, decision making and assertiveness
skills and to prevent the harmful consequences of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit
drug use; and
WHEREAS,
the Clinic for Education, Treatment, and Prevention of Addiction, Inc., provides
the Soy Unica Soy Latina after school program free of charge and uses Soy Unica
Soy Latina project materials to provide substance abuse prevention and cultural
components to the program; and
WHEREAS,
the program´s highlight is the annual Soy Unica Soy Latina Rally and
Celebration where program participants showcase their newly found dancing and
public speaking skills and share what they have learned about alcohol and drugs,
their Latino culture, and themselves.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize the 2007 Soy Unica Soy Latina Rally and Celebration and its
many contributions to ensuring the health and well-being of Georgia´s young
Latina women.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the
organizers of the Soy Unica Soy Latina Rally and Celebration.
