RESOLUTION
Honoring
and remembering the life of Melvin Leslie, Sr.; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia lost one of its most distinguished citizens with the
passing of Melvin Leslie, Sr., on March 20, 2007, at the age of 96;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Leslie was the fourth child of the late Reo Bowen Leslie and the late
Sancture Bass Leslie; and
WHEREAS,
he was a member of the Trinity CME Church where he served as a grave digger, a
sexton, a steward, and a trustee; and
WHEREAS,
he was especially proud to have assisted in the construction of the naval base
in Perryville, Maryland, and the hospital, barracks, and mess hall at Fort
Gordon in Augusta; and
WHEREAS,
he also took great pride in his experience as a ship fitter, builder, and welder
on the USS
Tidewater
and other impaired naval vessels; and
WHEREAS,
later in his life he became a master farmer and gardener; and
WHEREAS,
he demonstrated his love for children by 11 years of service as a bus driver for
the Hancock County School System; and
WHEREAS,
he was a true patriarch to his children, grandchildren, family, and friends and
will be dearly missed; and it is fitting and proper that we extend sympathy to
his family and friends.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Melvin
Leslie, Sr., and extend their most sincere condolences to his
family.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Melvin Leslie, Sr.
