RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Professor Milner S. Ball; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
through his many writings, lectures, and projects such as the Public Interest
Practicum, Professor Ball has promoted an attitude towards the law that
integrates the vigor of theory with the concrete practice of compassion and
social justice; and
WHEREAS,
he earned his bachelor's degree from Princeton University and received a
divinity degree from Harvard University before completing his Juris Doctor at
the University of Georgia in 1971, where he served as the campus's Presbyterian
pastor; and
WHEREAS,
he is the founder of the Georgia School of Law's Public Interest Practicum, a
program created in 1992 that places law students in homeless shelters and soup
kitchens to provide information and assistance to clients on matters such as
housing, child custody, consumer debt, benefits and health care;
and
WHEREAS,
on Friday, March 30, 2007, Milner S. Ball will be honored with a Lifetime
Achievement Award at the Second Annual Working in The Public Interest Law
Conference, an entirely student organized conference dedicated to discussing
possible remedies and dynamic, creative, and unexplored methods to combat
poverty through the vehicle of the law; and
WHEREAS,
Professor Ball has also won a Lifetime Achievement Award from Hamline University
School of Law’s
Journal of Law and
Religion, and he has published a number of
writings on topics such as constitutional law and the relationship between law
and theology, including books

Law,
The Word and The
Law, and
Lying Down
Together; and
WHEREAS,
his immense dedication to his faith and to the teaching profession is surpassed
only by his loving devotion to his wife, June, who is a landscape and seascape
painter whose work has been exhibited throughout the East Coast from New York to
Florida and is represented in many institutional, corporate, and governmental
collections; and
WHEREAS,
as he has commanded the esteem of several generations of students and
colleagues, Professor Milner S. Ball has brought honor to the State of
Georgia.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize the outstanding achievements of Professor Milner S. Ball,
commend his dedication to the advance of social justice, and heartily extend to
him their sincerest best wishes for a golden tomorrow.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Professor
Milner S. Ball.
