A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Rome Symphony Orchestra on the occasion of its 85th
anniversary celebration; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
as the oldest symphony in the South, the Rome Symphony Orchestra celebrates its
85th year since its inaugural concert on May 11, 1921, featuring a program of
Strauss waltzes and the Overture to Weber's "Der Freischutz" among other
selections; and
WHEREAS,
the symphony disbanded during the years of World War II, but was reorganized in
1944 by Dr. Wilbur Rowand, Jack Kranyik, and Director Helen Dean Rhodes, who
carried the symphony until 1976, when the baton was passed to John Carruth, who
led the orchestra until his retirement in 1995; and
WHEREAS,
under Mr. Carruth's direction, the orchestra experienced tremendous growth, and
since that time, the Rome Symphony Orchestra has continued to enrich the
cultural life of Georgia with a tradition of musical excellence;
and
WHEREAS,
the Rome Symphony Orchestra is committed to presenting world-class performances,
maintaining a diverse repertoire, providing opportunities for area musicians,
cultivating and expanding musical appreciation, offering educational musical
experiences for all ages, and enhancing community pride and vitality;
and
WHEREAS,
on March 31, 2007, the Rome Symphony Orchestra will host its 85th Anniversary
Gala, featuring a performance by violinist Jun Iwasaki and an orchestral
performance of Khacharturian's
Spartacus Suite No.
2; Schubert's
Symphony No. 8, D.

B-minor,
"Unfinished"; and Weber's "Der Freischutz"
in honor of the symphony's first concert in 1921; and
WHEREAS,
the concert will be followed by an 85th Anniversary Champagne Celebration at
Coosa Country Club; and
WHEREAS, the arts are an indispensable part of life in Georgia, and the Rome Symphony Orchestra has amazed several generations of Georgians with consistently high quality performances year after year.

NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize the Rome Symphony Orchestra on the occasion of its 85th
anniversary celebration, commend its long tradition of musical excellence, and
extend their sincerest best wishes for the symphony's continued success.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Rome
Symphony Orchestra.
