A RESOLUTION


Celebrating the bicentennial anniversary of Morgan County; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the year 2007 marks the 200th anniversary of Morgan County's birth on December 12, 1807, when the Georgia General Assembly delineated Morgan County from Baldwin County; and

WHEREAS, the county was named in honor of Brigadier General Daniel Morgan, a hero of the American Revolution who is credited with the victory at Cowpens, South Carolina, a battle that is viewed as a critical turning point in the fight for independence; and

WHEREAS, Morgan County is known for the exceptional beauty of its countryside and the spectacular architecture of its many antebellum homes; and

WHEREAS, Morgan County has developed a reputation for its wonderful Southern hospitality and has become a vital and important part of Georgia, providing an outstanding quality of life for its more than 15,000 residents, including 4,301 Georgia families; and

WHEREAS, Morgan County is also known for its many historical markers recognizing important events which occurred there, including Civil War events and the Oliver Hardy (of Laurel and Hardy) Genius of Comedy Historical Marker; and Madison, its county seat, is also noted for hosting the Centennial Olympic Torch Relay on July 15, 1996; and

WHEREAS, Hard Labor Creek State Park, located outside of Rutledge, offers swimming, hiking, fishing, and equestrian facilities with more than 20 miles of riding trails, and the park also offers a beautiful 18 hole golf course, one of the most challenging in the state; and

WHEREAS, Morgan County has been the home of some of Georgia's finest citizens, including William Tappan Thompson, a journalist who founded the Savannah Morning News, and Lancelot Johnson, who first developed the process of pressing oil out of cottonseed; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that this body join Morgan County in recognizing this historic milestone.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in celebrating the bicentennial anniversary of Morgan County and honor the rich heritage of its 200 years and heartily extend to the county's residents the best of wishes for their continued success and prosperity.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Morgan County Board of Commissioners.
